Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then located numerous other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.

City officials said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.

A senior official stated the incident left him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
