The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The judges found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
